...You completely missed the point, Zinger. Nobody's talking about opening a sketchy poker game in which real money is at stake. This is for using GW gold for a chance to win in-game prizes. There would be no gambling with USD or any other forms of actual IRL currency. Actual cash would not be changing hands. Last I checked, there's no legislation for or against the use of Guild Wars platinum.

As I said before, if gambling done in an MMO with game currency were illegal, KoL's casino would be long-by now.

Honestly...

It's against the law for REAL WORLD MONEY. You can gamble all you want for play money. They cracked down on online poker for real cash but you can still play the play money ones all you want.

Nobody here is suggesting Anet is gonna send you a check.

It prevents ppl from buying 500000000000000000000000000000000000000000 tickets with the every 3 hour limit thing, and it gives poor or new players a chance to get money. 一,...,O

I say everyone "buys" a "unique", "tanned hide" that is identified by a number and at the end of the day the trader "recalls" one tanned hide because of "faulty manufacturing" and the trader pays a "reimbursement" to the player who turns in the "unique tanned hide".

...no one has to know...

Ahem... Actually, the broadwalk circles are gambling games.

So... why are not the FBI arresting the Anet staff?

To prvent people buying too much tickets, the solution is easy, not making them items, but server varaibales, an limitd the numbre of tickest per character owned...

Hehe... that way people would have one more reason to get more slots... hehehehe...

I'm against giving new players a chance to instantly win 100s of k. I mean, that may sound bad, but really, a level 5 guy in Kamadon doesn't deserve to win a lottery worth thousands. People should have to "earn" their gold somehow.

you do have to earn it lol, you obviously dont play lotteries in rl, you cant win unless you buy like a ton of tickets and still there is a HUGE chance you will still lose, i dont think a lvl 5 char will be able to spend 1k on tickets..... and even if he did get 1 ticket and somehow won, well he is damn lucky and thats one player out of 3 million.... its not game breaking but it would make some people very happy.

Reading comprehension for the win.

You didn't bold the integral part of Zinger's comment. Online Gambling is illegal in Arizona. He didn't say anything about lotteries (which are usually state run to support the school system).

That's true Hawk, but nevertheless, his comment isn't relevant because we aren't playing with real money, unless you have ebayed your gold, which is against the EULA regardless.

And Hawk, while I see your reasons, you could make it so that the return isn't that large. So while you buy a ticket for 500g, the return is only 10k. I mean, how often are you going to hit the jackpot?

And while they should have the earn the gold, unless they're sitting around LA and KC begging for 500g, this would be a fast goldsink if it were abused.

10g?!

1k per ticket, max tickets 100.

Proper gold sink now.

hey guess what killing people is illegal too....but you still do it in thousands of video GAMES. That isnt illegal in the least. Just like a lottery wouldnt be illegal.
But you do relize that GW would have to keep a VERY LARGE % of the ticket sales because if there are 3.5 million people buying a ticket every week (limit 1) then thats gonna be 35 million (at only 10g per) that means if you only get 3% of the winnings you would be at a little over 1 million gold.
I like the idea with a few tweeks.

ROFL. Okay, forget the lottery. Let's just implement a Jailhouse in guild wars. You can bail out yourself or your friends. Instant gold sink.

Sorry, Zinger. You really missed the ball on this one. This isn't gambling because no real life money is involved. We're only betting pixels. Same exact concept with the ring games. Or are you saying that people in those states can be put in jail for playing the ring games?

I like this idea, but it would definitely have to be downscaled a bit. I don't want to see multi-million dollar...er gold...awards being given out. How about local lotteries instead? Or even local contests, pay a fee to enter some skill based contest, max 20 contestants. winner collects the fees (but I suppose that's branching off into a different idea entirely).

Have hourly town-based gold lotteries. Pay 100g for a ticket in a major town (Ascalon, LA, Droks, Monastery, Kaineng, Cavalon, House Zu Heltzer, Kamaden, Sunspear Sanctuary and Kodash Bazaar only) Each town runs their own separate lottery. Each hour a prize winner is drawn and they must return to the lottery coordinator in that town to collect their prize. Each hour a chat message is delivered to everyone that bought a ticket announcing the winner.

Also have a HUGE Weekly drawing across the entire game. Tickets here also cost 100g each and the prize is a particular item. Each week it's something different. A Rare mini-pet, a perfect crystalline sword, a stack of booze, etc, etc. Winner is drawn every Saturday evening at 6pm PST and announced in chat the same way the Hall of Heroes and New builds are announced.

The winner has 1 day for local lotteries or 1 week for the weekly lottery to pick up his prize from any lottery coordinator. He is also notified each time he logs in that he won until he picks up the prize. If not picked up within the timeframe the prize is forfeit. Just like real-life lotteries.

There is 1 huge downside I see to this. As soon as the winner's name is announced across the player base, that person is gonna receive a TON!!! of pm's, possibly causing a huge lag or disconnect.

"Weekly lottery drawing announcement: Malice Black has just won a Ghostly Hero Mini-Pet in the Tyrian National Weekly Lottery"

800,000 players immediately try to PM Malice with "congrats", "WTG" "Can i buy it??" "plz give me free pet", "lucky sob", "u cheated!!!" "hacker!!!" "I'm reporting you" "hey, wanna join my guild", "trade u 7 unids for pet" ........

Hmm, think he can hit the "do not disturb" button fast enough?

Anet dont like rich people. A lottery making someone rich or insanely rich (depending on % winner received) is not something I could see Anet wanting to do.

Imagine a new millionaire or multi multi millionaire every week. I could see the prices of high end weapons rising which I am sure it is not something Anet would want.

Nice idea but I doubt it will be implemented.

Prices don't need to be gold.

There could be other prices. For example, allow one unlock of one event mask you didn't got.

You if you where in Dragon Festivel but not saved the Dragon Mask, you could unlick it again.

Just to point out to all the people who are saying something along the lines of:
"zOMG gambling, that's illegal in my state!"...
Nine rings and rings of fortune are gambling games where you stake your tickets on gaining or losing more tickets based on random chance.
You had better not inform your local precinct or you're going to go to jail. (/end sarcasm+cynicism)

Regardless, I like the idea.
